WEST VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE CANNER, salt-glazed, approximately half-gallon capacity, cylindrical form with slight shoulder, grooved wax-seal rim, and Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "CHARLES KLEIN. / FANCY & STAPLE / GROCERIES. / FRESH MEATS & C / 745 COR. 8 TH. & MARKET STS / WHEELING, W. VA.", some additional simple decorative ornaments. Circa 1880. 7 1/2" H, 4 7/8" D rim.
Catalogue Note: Charles Klein was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1849. He is listed as a grocer in the 1880 and 1900 census records. According to his obituary, Klein was involved in the laundry business afterward. He passed away in 1914 and is buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.

Excellent condition having some minute scattered flakes to rim interior.
