WEST VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JUG, salt-glazed, designated two-gallon capacity, semi-ovoid form with ringed mouth, applied strap handle with medial ridge. Stenciled cobalt "JOHN L. SMITH & CO. / 1407 MAIN / 1406 SOUTH / STS. / WHEELING. W. VA.", brushed cobalt wavy line to shoulder and straight line above base. Circa 1870. 13 7/8" HOA.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith, Romney, WV.
Catalogue Note: John L. Smith (1837-1876) is listed as a druggist in the 1870 U.S. census. He married Lyda A. Wills in Belmont County, Ohio on February 8, 1872. Dying at the young age of 38, he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV.

Condition

Very good condition, having two chips to foot edge, a hairline encircling handle, and a faint hairline to side. Manufacturing flaws including glazed over flake to mouth, as made.
