Catalogue Note: Charles Kraus was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1840. He emigrated to the United States when he was 19 years of age. In 1865, following the Civil War, Kraus started a clothing business in Wheeling. By 1881, Charles and his brothers Solomon and Samuel made the decision to venture into the more lucrative liquor business. Kraus & Co. became a success, blending and bottling their whiskeys onsite for their wholesale trade.
