Catalogue Note: Richard Henry Pratt (American, 1840-1924) founded The Carlisle Indian Industrial School in 1879 under the pretense of reform. Run as essentially a quasi-military boot camp, this school, along with a number of others operating in the same era, was a major governmental tool in controlling tribal uprisings and forcing assimilation on a large number of Native American youth who were removed from their communities. Pratt believed that an American Indian child "is born a blank, like all the rest of us. Transfer the savage born infant to the surroundings of a civilization and he will grow to possess a civilized language and habit." These sentiments are writ large with his infamous motto of "kill the Indian and save the man".

Very good condition overall with well-developed detail (other copies appear less strong than this example) and no significant fading; typical minor edge and corner roughness/minor creasing; very minor scattered staining and toning; two small pieces of old darkened tape on the top and bottom edges, small pinhole in the center of the lower margin; mounts directly attached to the paper key verso.
