ALABAMA INDESTRUCTIBLE ELLA SMITH CLOTH DOLL, sculpted head with hand-painted facial features including brown eyes, eyebrows, eyelashes and red lips, applied ears, painted ochre/brown hair with soft curls, cloth body with joints at shoulders and hips, front torso stamped "PATENTED SEPT 26, 1905" and "NO. 9", reverse of torso signed "Jamestown Expo. 1907 / Nov. 5", one leg stamped "MRS S. S. SMITH / Manufacturer of and / The Alabama Indestructible Doll / ROANOKE, ALA."; face/neck, lower arms and lower legs are painted/glazed, hands have formed fingers and feet have formed and stitched toes. Fitted in vintage clothing including white gown with red and blue floral print, vintage undergarments, later socks and leather moccasin. Circa 1905. 21 1/2" H.
Very good overall condition with expected wear, some scattered imperfections including some separations to face and head, some roughness to the finger and toe tips. Clothing in very good condition with minor wear, moccasins with some deterioration.
Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
