ALBANY, NEW YORK PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk and wool on linen, six alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, below with verse that reads "I love them that love me and those that seek me early shall find me / Remember thy Creator God Make him thy fear thy love thy hope / For him thy power employ Thy confidence and joy", lower half featuring a Berlin work pictorial farm scene with a shepherdess, cow, and sheep, bottom edge signed "Jane Augusta Adams. Albany. June A.D. 1842., all encompassed by a scrolling vine border. Housed under glass in a 19th century molded wood frame, information from Anne (Nancy) Richards Rosivach on back. Dated 1842. 15 3/4" x 15 3/8" sight, 17 7/8" x 17 3/8" OA.
Provenance: Descended in the family of Jane Augusta Adams Dickey. Emma Dickey Richards to Carrie Elizabeth Richards, willed to Anne (Nancy) Richards Rosivach in 1969.
Catalogue Note: Jane Augusta Adams was born on December 15, 1828 to parents Rowland Adams (1797-1851) and Lydia Webster (1798-1875) of Albany, New York. Her father is a sixth generation descendant of John Adams (d.1706), a millwright, of Menotomy (Cambridge), Massachusetts, who is believed to be the sixth son of Henry Adams of Braintree. Jane married Andrew J. Dickey (1829-1911) on May 18, 1853, and they had two daughters, Mary Adams, who died in childhood, and Emma Augusta. Jane and her husband lived in Albany and the village of Sing Sing, later Ossining. She died on February 22, 1887 and is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, Westchester Co., NY.

Condition

Good visual condition with light toning and scattered holes to linen, wool thread with losses, some thread with fading/fugitive color, frame with some wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
