AMERICAN / ENGLISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool and silk on linen, upper half featuring a white church with a lawn, flanked by two angels above and grapevines with perched birds along the sides, lower half with a religious eight-line verse surrounded by foliate and floral pictorial motifs, lower edge signed "Ann Smith / Work 1844", all encompassed by a scrolled floral vine border. Housed under glass in a period birdseye maple veneer frame. Dated 1844. 20" x 21 1/4" sight, 26 5/8" x 28" OA.
Very good visual condition with toning and a few stains to linen, some thread with fading/fugitive color, frame with wear and surface scratches, sides with cracks and losses to veneer, front with a few cracks and chips to veneer. Not examined out of frame.
