ABINGTON, PLYMOUTH CO., MASSACHUSETTS NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, seven alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of stitching, lower half with verse of "Learn to live af you would / wifh to die", below signed "Eliza Ann Tirrill born / November 15th 1809 Aged 8 / Years wrought July 23 1818", all encompassed by a linear border. Housed under UV glass in a modern frame. Dated 1818. 8 3/4" x 9 1/2" sight, 15 1/8" x 15 3/4" OA. 
Catalogue Note: Eliza Ann Tirrill (Tirrell) was born on November 15, 1809 in Abington, MA to parents Oakes Tirrill (1772-1862) and Hannah Snell (1781-1861). Her parents married on September 15, 1805 and had eight children including Eliza, the family moved to Boston around 1825. Enrolling in the first year it was founded, Eliza Ann attended Mount Holyoke Seminary in South Hadley, MA and graduated in 1840. She went on to become a teacher in Boston, according to 19th century catalogues from Mount Holyoke. Eliza Ann never married and, by 1870, was living with her sister Hannah Snell (1815-1901) and brother-in-law Waitstill Hastings (1807-1888) in Brooklyn, NY. The sisters lived together until Eliza's death on December 21, 1895. 

Condition

Good to very good visual condition with some losses to thread notably to center numeral row, thread with fading/fugitive color, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
