AMERICAN INITIALED AND DATED CRAZY QUILT-TYPE PIECED COMFORT / BEDSPREAD, hand-stitched, 30 whole blocks having various plain and patterned fabrics including velvet with all-over polychrome embroidery edges and pictorial motifs, featuring flowers, a peacock, an anchor, and starbursts, three blocks signed with the initials "M.B.L.", "M.M.L.", and "C.H.L." embellished by flowers, dated in two blocks "February 2nd" and "1893", wide back-over-front binding, three-paneled red fabric backing. Dated 1893. 70" x 85".
Catalogue Note: Per consignor, "The quilt was purchased out of an estate in Chapel Hill, NC 25 or 30 years ago. The original family who owned it reported that it was made as a joint project by three sisters as a gift for their mother." Unfortunately, there is no historical documentation to accompany this quilt.
Very good visual condition, top with several scattered small holes, one block with white and purple flowers having larger holes masked by blue coloring, some losses to embroidery thread, a few scattered stains and spotting, backing with a few larger stains, some light fading notably along fold lines, one seam between two panels having approximately 13" L separation.
