MID-ATLANTIC SIGNED AND DATED "STEEPLECHASE" VARIATION PIECED QUILT, hand-stitched, 36 four-patch whole blocks in solid red and white fabrics, arranged in a target pattern radiating from a center circle, straight-line and curved quilting, applied white binding, three-paneled plain backing. Signed in the quilting stitching along the center of one edge, "Rhoda Dyke / Aged 76 / Alice Dyke / Aged 55 / 1905". Dated 1905. 79" x 80".
Catalogue Note: The identities of Rhoda and Alice Dyke have not yet been determined. One possible candidate is Rhoda M. Wilson Dyke (1826-1916), who lived in Allegany Co., New York for most of her life. She had a daughter-in-law named Alice Elizabeth Crawford Dyke (b. 1853), but Alice died in 1893.

Condition

Fair to good overall condition, top with overall toning, some scattered stains and spotting, binding with several tears mostly being significant, backing with toning, scattered stains, and at least one hole.
