AMERICAN PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, center featuring a four-line verse by Isaac Watts (England, 1674-1748) which reads, "Were I so tall to reach the pole / Or grasp the ocean with my span / I must be measured by my soul / The mind's the standard of the man", surrounded by floral and foliate pictorial motifs, signed at the bottom "Ann . Jo[...n?]s / 1818" within a foliate frame topped by a bird, three sides with scrolling floral vine border. Housed under glass in a grain-painted molded frame. Dated 1818. 19 1/4" x 15 5/8" sight, 22 1/4" x 18 5/8" OA.
Condition
Good visual condition with overall toning to linen, scattered stains, loss to thread on signature, thread with some fading/fugitive color, frame with some wear, surface scratches, and flakes/chips to finish along edges. Not examined out of frame.
