AMERICAN, PROBABLY SOUTHERN, WHITEWORK COUNTERPANE FRAGMENT AND COVERLET, LOT OF TWO, comprising a fragment of a candlewick embroidered counterpane, center featuring a grid pattern of alternating floral motifs with one motif having cut-out accents, two sides with bow-knot tassel and swag border; and a huckaback coverlet, white cotton, three joined panels, having a latticed design with honeycomb patterns, embroidered "6" in one corner in red. Per consignor, counterpane probably Virginia or North Carolina, coverlet probably Southern. Late 18th/first quarter 19th century. Counterpane 49" x 56"; coverlet 78 1/2" x 106".
Counterpane in poor to fair overall condition with minor to heavy toning, several scattered holes and mends, some stains and spotting, two edges cut-down and rolled; coverlet in poor to fair with overall toning, several breaks, fraying, and separation to yarn throughout, some areas of thinning and holes, a 2" L tear along one side edge.
