BARNES / KNAPP FAMILY, SULLIVAN COUNTY, NEW YORK SIXTH-PLATE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS, including tintype and daguerreotype examples, comprising nine images, some having penciled identification to back including "Mama's Sister / Eliza Barnes" with husband, "Aunt Frances / Knapp", William Knapp ("Papa's Brother / Uncle Billy"), "Uncle John Knapp" a private in the Union army pictured with a fellow soldier, and Stephen Barnes, two having tinted accents. Housed as a single group in a period rosewood frame. Mid 19th century. 11 3/4" x 10".
Catalogue Note: A label to the back of frame notes "From Estate of / Francis K. Engel / 3625-49th St. / N.W., D.C." Francis Kelly Engel was presumably the first wife of Norman T. Engel, Jr. He later married Alva Maude Knapp Tyler. The current lot contains portraits of some members of Alva's maternal and paternal family members. Alva's mother was Naomi Knapp Tyler (1867-1947), and her parents were Matilda Barnes (1841-1922) and Alvin Knapp (1836-1881).

Condition

Most very good to excellent condition, two daguerreotypes with moderate spotting and toning. Not examined out of frame.
