BRITISH / WELSH PICTORIAL BERLIN WORK NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool on canvas, top with two alphabet rows featuring Roman numerals in the bottom row, below with various pictorial motifs including roosters, birds, a central two-story house, and foliate motifs, center lower edge signed "Gretta. Rees." surrounded by three vignettes of outdoor scenes with buildings, all encompassed by a diagonal-line border. Housed under glass in a modern frame. Second half 19th century. 18 1/2" x 20 1/4" sight, 20 5/8" x 22 3/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: "Rees" is a common surname in Wales. Though Gretta Rees has yet to be identified, her first name could have possibly been "Margretta", and there were several Margretta Rees living in Wales during the second half of the 19th century.
Mostly in good to very good visual condition with light toning, some scattered losses to wool notably in the lower half, edges of canvas have been cut causing fraying and losses, thread with some fading and fugitive color, frame with wear and surface scratches, bottom edge of frame detached but included. Not examined out of frame.
