BRONZE LOCOMOTIVE BELL WITH LOUISVILLE AND NASHVILLE RAILROAD ASSOCIATION, bronze bell with cast-iron cradle and yoke, the bell itself is marked "1341" and the yoke is marked "[?]805". Currently mounted to a four-wheel dolly for ease of transport. First half 20th century. 23 1/2" to top of handle, bell 17" D.
Catalogue Note: This bell descended in the family of William Craig Cato (1897-1981) of Davidson County, TN. Cato, a WWI veteran having been a firefighter on the U.S.S. Ozark, worked as an engineer for the L&N railroad for most of his working career, and retired from there in the later part of his life. The Craig family have an important American lineage, having been imprisoned for preaching without a license in Virginia; subsequently being defended by Patrick Henry. A later ancestor, Elijah Craig, is known as the father of bourbon.
Very good condition overall, minor surface rust and pitting to iron components, some surface discoloration and staining to the bell itself.
