BUCKS CO. / CHESTER CO., PENNSYLVANIA PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen gauze, top two-thirds embroidered with various flower and fruit pictorial motifs including grapes, strawberries, and roses, bottom third signed "Martha P. Rich 1831" with a pair of birds to the right, below featuring a fine depiction of a grand two-story house on a hill with a green lawn, flanked by two willow trees, three sides with a floral vine border, all encompassed by a green ribbon. Housed under glass in a period mahogany and mahogany veneer frame with poplar substrate. Dated 1831. 19 3/4" x 18" sight, 25" x 23 1/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: The maker is likely identified as Martha P. Rich, who was born on December 1, 1816 in Pennsylvania, probably in Bucks Co., to parents Anthony Worthington Rich (1787-1843) and Maria Mann (1792-1871). Her parents were members of Deep Run Presbyterian Church in Doylestown, and the church recorded that Martha married Robert B. Grier (Greir) (1813-1876) on March 13, 1845. The couple resided in Bucks Co. and had two sons, John and Frank. Martha died on September 21, 1879 and is buried at Doylestown Cemetery in Doylestown, PA along with her husband.


Very good visual condition with linen having some toning and scattered holes, some thread with light fading/fugitive color, "31" in date possibly replaced thread stitching or later added, frame with minor wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
