SPRING HILL FEMALE ACADEMY, MAURY CO., TENNESSEE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, five alphabet rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, lower third signed "Sinai V. Crutcher / Spring Hill Female Academy / June 1 1841", all within a checkered frame, encompassed by a floral vine and a linear outer border. Unframed. Dated 1841. 20 1/4" x 19 1/4".
Literature: For information on antebellum Tennessee samplers and Spring Hill Female Academy, see Core and Hasson - Female Education and the Ornamental Arts in Antebellum Tennessee, MESDA Journal, Vol. 40.
Catalogue Note: The maker is identified as Sinai Virginia Crutcher, who was born on September 12, 1826 in Tennessee, probably in Williamson Co. or Maury Co. The identity of her parents is not certain, possibly being Robert F. Crutcher (1788-1866) and Nancy L. Childress (1800-1861) or Henry Lawson Crutcher (1798-1870) and Elizabeth J. Evans (1809-1898). Sinai was a resident of Williamson Co., TN by the time she married physician Rolly Peyton Smith Kimbro (1821-1895) on October 15, 1844. The couple lived in Williamson Co. and Nashville, TN before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, and they had three daughters, Virginia Julia, Irene, and Ella. Sinai died April 16, 1910 and is buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, GA.
The Spring Hill Female Academy was located in Maury Co., TN under the superintendence of Jesse Ellis and his wife Mary Lewis Maum Ellis. Sinai likely made this sampler under the tutelage of Mrs. Ellis. In the Nashville Tennessean newspaper on July 8, 1841, the school placed an advertisement to announce the upcoming session, just about month after this present sampler was made.

Condition

Stitching mostly in very good overall condition with a few losses to thread in the last alphabet row and losses to thread along edges, some thread with light fading/fugitive color, linen with toning and some stains, having damage and tears along the edges.
