CAPTAIN ORLANDO H. ROSS, COUSIN AND AIDE-DE-CAMP OF ULYSSES S. GRANT, FAMILY ARCHIVE, UNCOUNTED LOT, mostly ephemera gathered in the late 19th century and early 20th century, including various newspaper clippings featuring many related to President Ulysses S. Grant, some personal correspondence with many to Mrs. Belle Hawkins Ross, wife of Capt. Ross, from other family members, a tintype of Orlando H. Ross in his uniform, assorted daguerreotypes and photographs with most being of unidentified sitters, an official copy of the appointment for Orlando H. Ross to Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Captain on March 11, 1863, a set of three forks reportedly belonging to General Grant with a later handwritten note, an U.S. Army issued footlocker lock, a framed facsimile of General Order No. 9 by General Robert E. Lee, a "Forget Me Not" autograph book including a signature by Capt. Ross, an "Official Programme" for the funeral of President Grant on August 8th, 1885, and some volumes including a copy of Memorial Report on the Life and Character of Orlando Hopkins Ross of Burnside Post, Department of the Potomac, G.A.R., all presented with a small wooden chest. 
Catalogue Note: Orlando Hopkins Ross was born on December 5, 1835 to in Bethel,Clermont Co., Ohio parents James Ross (1801-1850) and Anne Simpson (1805-1881). He married Missouri Belle Hawkins on August 25, 1860, and they had three daughters, Nellie Grant, Mary Penn, and Phebe A., and one son, Orlando Hawkins, all born after the war. 
According to the Memorial Report on the Life and Character of Orlando Hopkins Ross, his army service is described as "enlisted in 21st Regiment, Illinois Volunteers and was assigned to Company 'C' but never mustered. Was detailed at General Grant's Headquarters. Was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant Company 'D' 20th Illinois, November 7, 1862 and immediately detailed on General Grant's staff, March 11, 1863. Resigned [his] commission at City Point, Virginia, September 7, 1864". He was the cousin to General Ulysses S. Grant, who became the 18th President of the United States, and served as an Aide-de-Camp U.S.V. on Grant's staff. 
After the Civil War, Ross was appointed to a clerkship in the office of the third Auditor of the Treasury. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, and the Freemasons. Ross died on October 13, 1892 at his Washington, DC home after a two month-long illness. He is buried Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia along with his wife.

Poor to very good overall condition, many ephemera pieces with tears and losses.
