VIRGINIA AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAMMY / NANNY CDV, depicting a well-dressed African-American woman, possibly enslaved, wearing a bow in her hair and earrings, seated with three white children, presumably sisters, on thin cardstock, backstamped for Tanner & Van Ness, Photographers, No. 121 Main Street, Lynchburg, VA. Inked "Miss Sallie Thompson" to verso. Circa 1860. 4" x 2 1/2".
Catalogue Note: Sallie Thompson (1850-1873) was born in Fincastle, Botetourt Co., VA, the first child of James R. Thompson (1823-1888) and Helen M.J. Davis (1827-1895). Her father was a farmer and served as Sheriff of Botetourt Co. Sallie was the first wife of Joseph Tavener Fudge of Covington, VA.
