CHARLES WILLIAM SMITH (VIRGINIA, 1893-1987) ABSTRACT BLOCK PRINT, titled, numbered, signed, and dated "Still Life / 2/7 / Charles Smith / 45" in lower margin. Housed in a modern frame. Dated 1945. 13" x 17 1/2" image, 18 1/4" x 22 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Lofton, VA, Charles William Smith (1893-1987) studied at the Corcoran Institute in Washington, DC and at Yale University. Having attained some degree of success in the mid-1920s, Smith exhibited widely, including solo shows at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was Professor of Painting at the University of Virginia from 1946 to 1963 and served as Chairman of the Art Department there for all but one of those years. Perhaps best known for his distinctive woodcuts rendered in publications like Old Virginia, Old Charleston, and The University of Virginia, Smith also experimented with abstract compositions in the Cubist-style during the mid 20th century. The present example dates from this mid-century period.
