CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE IDENTIFIED 10TH VIRGINIA REGIMENT CANVAS POUCH / SEWING KIT, black oil cloth with fabric lining, single flap with single-button tie off, interior of flap with period inked inscription "William Jennings / Hospital Steward / 10th Va: Reg: / Jackson's Div. / Jany. 1862 C.S. Army". Contents of pouch include a brass Confederate Infantry "Script I" button backmarked for Isaac Campbell & Co., 71 Jeremy N St., London, presumably from Jennings' jacket, brass "G" and "V"
hat insignia, and a handwritten note "Your great-grandfather Jenning's sewing kit he used in the Civil War. He was in same reg. as g.g. uncle Abraham Byrd. 1862. 4 1/2" x 6" closed.

Catalogue Note: William K. Jennings (1838-1900) was born at Conrad's Store, present day Elkton, in Rockingham Co. to parents Dr. Simon B. Jennings and Barbara Ann Kite Jennings. He enlisted as a private in Co. I, 10h Va, Infantry at Harper's Ferry on May 25, 1861. By 1863 he had risen in rank to 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded at 2nd Manassas, August 30, 1862, and again on September 19, 1864 at Winchester. He worked as both Hospital Steward and Commissary Clerk.
