CIVIL WAR VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CANE, natural branch with curled grip having a carved snake terminal with tack eyes, top with a period inset brass plaque engraved "Dr. Monroe / Medivay / White House Hospital, Va / June 1862." Fitted with a later brass shell for the ferrule. Retains its original natural surface. 1862. 34" H.
Catalogue Note: The identity of the doctor's name on the present cane has not been determined. "White House Hospital" probably refers to the Battle of Antietam hospital on George Line's Farm, although the battle didn't occur until three months after the date on this cane.
Old repair to a break on the lower shaft, otherwise excellent.
