RARE PATRICK CO., VALLEY OF VIRGINIA SOLDIER OWNED CONFEDERATE IMPRINT MAP OF VIRGINIA IN ORIGINAL STATE, "Map of the State of Virginia Containing The Counties, Principal Towns, Railroads, Rivers, Canals & All Other Internal Improvements." Published by West & Johnston, Richmond, VA, 1862, inset "View of Capitol Square Richmond VA" in the upper left corner. Retains its original gilt-stamped paper-covered boards with the seal of Virginia to the back. Inscriptions inside the front cover include "G. B. Scott, 50th Va. Inf., May 27th, 1864", Mrs. Lucretia Spangler, Meadows of Dan, Patrick Co., Va.", and a third difficult-to-read inscription listing several doctor's names. There are also well-executed pencil drawings to the back of the map, including a pair of panorama views of a city, most likely Richmond, and a butterfly on a bloom lettered "Virginia 1864" below. Dated 1862. Covers 6 3/8" x 4 3/8"; map 26 1/4" x 36 3/4".
Catalogue Note: This map was owned by G. Boston Scott (1841-1864) of Patrick Co., VA. He enlisted on June 21, 1861, at Wythe Co. as a private in Co. K of the 50th Virginia Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant on August 7, 1863, and transferred to Co. S. Scott was mortally wounded on June 2, 1864, during the Battle of Cold Harbor, only six days after receiving the present map. He died from his wounds on June 19 at a POW hospital in Richmond. The inscribed Spangler name is his mother and was likely recorded by a nurse so the map could be returned to her. The doctors' names were likely his attending physicians who helped transfer the map and his other possessions to his mother after his death.

Condition

Fine overall condition, the map with only some light toning and a few minute holes to the folds, the boards with light wear and creasing.
