CONNECTICUT SLAVE MANUMISSION MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT, dated April 2, 1821, "Know ye, that I Rebecca Jennings of Fairfield, ... influenced by the strong desire of Dinah, my negro servant & slave, now of the age of about sixty-four years, and in consideration of her long & faithful services, and of the sum of one dollar by her to me in hand ... have liberated, emancipated and forever set free the said Dinah ...", signed Rebecca Jennings X her mark, witnessed by Samuel Rowland, two seals, one detached, with docketing on verso. 12 1/4" x 8".
Catalogue Note: The Jennings family played a prominent role in the history of Fairfield, CT. This is demonstrated by a survey of place names like Jennings Beach, Jennings Road, and Jennings School. The initial settlement of the area was made in 1650 by Joshua Jennings. Over the next three hundred years, his descendants would become an indispensable part of Fairfield society. Records in the collection of Fairfield University indicate that upon her death, Rebecca left a portion of her estate to Dinah.
