EDWARD CHALMERS LEAVITT (AMERICAN, 1842-1904) STILL-LIFE WITH ROSES, oil on canvas with likely original stretcher, signed and dated lower left. Housed under glass in a fine gilt frame with molded-composition Rococo-style foliate ornamentation. Dated 1898. 10" x 15 1/2" sight, 17 3/4" x 23 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Edward Chalmers Leavitt (1842-1904) served in the United States Navy during the Civil War. In the decades following the war, he established himself as the leading painter of Providence high society, becoming especially noted for his opulent still-life compositions.
Excellent overall visual condition. Frame with very minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
