Housed under glass in a period, possibly original, gilt frame with molded-composition ornament. Fourth quarter 19th century. 6 7/8" x 8 1/4" sight, 16 1/2" x 18" OA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Fort Ann, New York, John Henry Dolph (1835-1903) was a 19th century American artist who was mostly recognized during his lifetime for oil paintings of dogs and cats. Having begun his career as a portrait painter in Detroit, Michigan in the 1850s, Dolph also painted landscapes in the Hudson River School manner before his 1875 depiction of a Persian cat drew so much attention in New York City art circles that he shifted his artistic focus almost entirely to animal painting thereafter. The present depiction of a kitten and a bumblebee is a classic example of his mature work.
