Catalogue Note: Part of an important family of American artists, Edward Moran was born in England and immigrated to America at an early age. He began his working career as a weaver but quickly switched to painting when he was invited to study under both Paul Weber and James Hamilton in Philadelphia, the latter's influence being particularly evident in Moran's marine paintings. In 1862, he and his younger brother Thomas journeyed to London, where they encountered the work of J. M. W. Turner, an artist whose dynamic treatment of atmosphere would greatly influence the art both Moran brothers thereafter. Exhibiting frequently in the prime of his career, Moran turned in the latter years of his life almost exclusively to historical marine painting when he undertook a series of 13 marine scenes based on significant events in American history, which he titled "The Edward Moran Series of Historical Paintings Representing Important Epochs in the Maritime History of the United States".
