PAIR OF GEORGE COPE (PENNSYLVANIA, 1855-1929), ATTRIBUTED, STILL-LIFE PAINTINGS, oil on canvas, one depicting strawberries, the other various fruits, no signature(s) located, bearing an old printed exhibition label giving the artist's name. Each on original stretcher and housed in period, likely original, gilt frame with molded-composition ornamentation. Fourth quarter 19th century. Each 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" sight, 15 1/2" x 17 1/2" OA.
Provenance: From a Washington, DC area estate.
Catalogue Note: A life-long resident of West Chester, Pennsylvania, George Cope (1855-1929) studied with Herman Herzog (1832-1932) in Philadelphia in the 1870's and was later influenced by trompe l'oeil painters such as William Harnett (1848-1892). The present pair of still-lifes appear to be early examples of Cope's work.

Condition

Each in very good overall original condition with very minor areas of discoloration. Minor area of inpainting to center strawberry on one example. Scattered minor inpainting to other example. Frames with very minor wear.
