ROBERTSON (ILLINOIS, ACTIVE 1852-1885) FOLK ART LANDSCAPE PAINTING, oil on canvas, after Francis Danby (Irish, 1793-1861) "Fairy Island", large depiction of a cove with tropical birds, signed on reverse for "Geo. J. Robertson / Rockford, ILL." Housed in likely original gilt molded frame. Dated 1868. 25" x 35" sight, 40" x 49 1/2" OA.

Catalogue Note: Born in Scotland, George J. Robertson (active 1845-1885) is recorded in Cleveland, Ohio by 1845 and in Milwaukee, Wisconsin a year later, where he painted a view of the young city which was made into a period lithograph. Later he moved to Rockford, Illinois, where he taught painting and drawing at the Young Ladies Seminary for several decades.

Very good overall visual condition, old tears with associated repairs and inpainting. Frame with scattered very minor losses.
