Catalogue Note: Hubbard Latham Fordham (1794-1872) was a painter of portraits, still lifes, and landscapes working in New York City and its environs during the second and third quarters of the 19th century. Born in Sag Harbor, Fordham was apparently the keeper of the Cedar Island Lighthouse for some period and often spent time there painting and sketching. The present work is an excellent example of his mature style and stands out as a fine 19th-century American folk portrait. Sarah Ann Reeves Waterhouse was the wife of Robert Waterhouse (1797-1868) of Brooklyn, New York. Their 1825 marriage is recorded in the "Columbian Centinel", published in Massachusetts. The 1850 US Census for Ward 13 in New York City records Robert as a "grocer" (merchant) of substantial means, living with his wife Sarah and their seven children.
