IMPORTANT GEORGE WASHINGTON AND ROBERT E. LEE OWNED WALKING STICK / CANE, the hickory handgrip made from a hub of George Washington's carriage, joined to a shaft fashioned from a tree branch, the joint covered with a coin silver band, finished with an iron ferrule. Together with a CDV depicting George Washington's carriage pulled by a team of four horses, being the carriage that the present cane's grip was made from. Currently framed with brass plaque. Two pieces total. Fashioned circa 1870. 35 1/2" LOA.
Provenance: From the collection of Williston and Josephine Cofer, Alexandria, VA.
Cane from Heritage Auctions, 12/1/2007, lot 32337.
Ex-collection of famed Civil War artist Don Troiani.
Descended in the Burwell family.
CDV acquired from cane's consignor after the auction.
Catalogue Note: The present cane descended in the family of Lewis Burwell whose grandfather was a close friend of General Robert E Lee. Lee had been given the cane by a Washington family member.

Condition

Very good condition, usage wear to surface of shaft. small loss to band at base of grip, 3" shrinkage crack to end above ferrule.
