Catalogue Note: Born in England, William Garl Browne, Jr. (1823-1894) came to the United States with his family in 1837. In the 1840's and 1850's he painted numerous portraits in Virginia and North Carolina, several of which depict Confederate officers. The present example is possibly a highly-developed study of the finished portrait of Jackson now at the Virginia Military Institute.
