JEANETTA EMILY CONRAD (SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA, 1811-1898), ATTRIBUTED, FOLK ART THEOREM DRAWING, watercolor on paper, a vibrant composition depicting polychrome flowers in a stylized double-handled ceramic vase / urn, no signature located, retaining a 19th-century pine backing board from the drawing's former frame bearing pencil inscription (possibly a transcription) "Painted about 1828 / J. E. C. / Jeanetta Emily Conrad." Currently unframed. Circa 1828. 11 3/4" x 9 3/4".
Catalogue Note: Jeanetta Emily Conrad (1811-1898) of Harrisonburg, Virginia is believed to have studied art in Baltimore, Maryland and is known to have painted a number of portraits of Shenandoah Valley sitters, including one example formerly in the important collection of Dr. and Mrs. Henry P. Deyerle (see Sotheby's Sale 6716 lot 676). The present drawing, likely executed when the artist was a teenager before her formal training, nonetheless demonstrates Conrad's innate sense of design and color.
Good as-found condition with minor to moderate toning and discoloration. Minor tears and moderate edge losses. Partially laid on 19th-century (probably later) paper backing.
