KARSTEN PETERSEN (FORSYTH CO., NORTH CAROLINA, 1776-1857), ATTRIBUTED, PAINT-DECORATED POPLAR DAY BED, plain crest rail over a slated back. Restored red-and-black paint-decorated surface. Circa 1810. 29 1/2" H, 71 1/4" W, 23 5/8" D.
Provenance: From the Ann and Clay Ring family collection, Winston-Salem, NC.
Catalogue Note: According to the consignor, the present day bed was made for Frederic Christian Meinung and Johanna Elisabeth Oraezel Meinung around the time of their marriage in 1808. Additionally, there was an old note (not present) with the day bed that read, in part, "This sofa was property of / Daughter of Gottfried Praetzel / One of builders of Salem, N. C. / Johanna E. Praetzel / Mrs. Frederick Christian Meinung / Born January 1st 1785 / Married 1808 / Died June 2nd 1857 / One of the first teachers of Salem Academy / Grandmother of Lou & Sallie Shaffner & Francis C. Meinung Sr. / Refinished and Covered - by Henry K. Meinung - Great Grandson / June 19, 19[?]7".

Condition

Very good overall condition with areas of expected wear. Cushion and upholstery are latter additions. Painted surface restored.
