KATHERINE PLEYDELL-BOUVERIE (ENGLISH, 1895-1985) STUDIO POTTERY STONEWARE COVERED BOX, cylindrical form, light ash-glazed with simple carved design. Impressed "KB" seal above base. 20th century. 2 1/8" HOA, 3 5/8" D rim.
Catalogue Note: Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie is known as a woman pioneer in the field of British Studio Pottery. She began her pottery studies in 1921 eventually being accepted as a student of Bernard Leach and Tsuronosuke Matsubayashi at Leach Pottery. Katherine eventually set up a workshop and wood-fired kiln on her family estate at Coleshill, Berkshire. She is recorded as saying "I want my pots to make people think, not of the Chinese, but of things like pebbles and shells and birds' eggs and the stones over which moss grows."
