LEHIGH / NORTHAMPTON CO., PENNSYLVANIA FOLK ART FRAKTUR DRAWING / REWARD OF MERIT, watercolor and ink on paper, featuring a colorful depiction of a bird standing next to tulip flowers, lower edge inscribed "Criftina Leienberger" in ornate lettering, verso with later pencil-inscribed "Stephen Shoemaker / February th 9 1845". Unframed. Early 19th century. 5" x 4" OA.
Catalogue Note: Cristina (Christina / Christeana) Leienberger (Lienberger) was born on April 6, 1798 in Lehigh/Northampton Co., PA to parents Abraham Leienberger (Lienberger) (1750-1832) and Elizabeth Barbara Schmitt (1764-1842). She married William Schumaker (Shoemaker) (1800-1878) some time before 1827, and they had at least four children. This includes Stephen Schumaker (Shoemaker) (1827-1901), who inscribed on the verso of this drawing. Cristina died on December 2, 1865 and is buried at Saint Pauls United Church of Christ of Indianland in Walnutport, Northampton Co., PA.

Condition

Good to very good visual condition with overall toning, scattered spotting and stains, a loss to upper proper left corner affecting the bird's head, a few tears and creases to top edge, scattered pinholes along edges, one pinhole with corresponding tear on first "r" in "Leienberger" and a small tear in lower proper left corner.
