LOUIS P. DIETERICH (GERMAN-BORN AMERICAN, 1842-1922) PORTRAIT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, (updated 11/29/2023) oil on canvas, bust depiction facing right, based on the famous 1866 portrait by William Edgar Marshall (American, 1837-1906), signed and titled on the back of the canvas in the upper left, "Abraham Lincoln / by Louis P. Dieterich". Housed in its original carved and molded walnut frame with gilt liner. Circa 1880. 29 1/2" x 24 1/2" sight, 38 1/2" x 34" OA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Germany, Louis Dieterich immigrated to the United States in 1854 and permanently settled in Baltimore, Maryland. He became a successful portraitist, painting prominent politicians, military figures, and social personalities. Dieterich exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1883 and was active in the Charcoal Club. Today, many pieces are found in Maryland collections, including The Annapolis Complex Collection, Maryland Historical Society, and the John Hopkins Portrait Collection.

Condition

Good as-found condition with no tears or repairs, areas of light flaking to paint, the liner is loose at the bottom, and the frame is dirty.
