LUKE WOODROW DOVE (SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA, 1919-2006) WEST VIRGINIA FOLK ART PAINTING, oil on artist's board, a draftsman-style rendition of a log cabin with front porch, titled "LOST RIVER STATE PARK CABIN", signed "Luke W. Dove" lower left and dated "1936" lower right. Housed under glass in a later oak frame. 1936. 21 3/4" x 27 1/4" sight, 25 1/2" x 31 1/2" OA.
Literature: See Shenandoah Valley Folklore Society, Folk and Decorative Art of the Shenandoah Valley", p. 12, fig. 208 for a painting by Dove of the Timberville, VA covered bridge dated 1938.
Catalogue Note: Luke Dove was born at Mathias, WV and spent the first 20 years of his life living with his family in the Lost River community. By 1938, he had moved with his family to Timberville, VA to work at the local orchard. For most of his life, Luke worked as a woodworker at Virginia Craftsman in Harrisonburg, VA. The present painting was executed when Luke was 17 years old and still living at Lost River.
