Catalogue Note: Born in Wimbledon in 1901, Michael Cardew is best known for revitalising the British slipware tradition and re-establishing the pottery at Winchcombe, Gloucestershire in 1926. Not one to settle down, Cardew also spent time at a pottery in Cornwall, and eventually began teaching and potting in West Africa in the second half of his life. His biography A Pioneer Potter was edited by his son Seth and published after his death in 1983.
