MONOPLEX OPTOMETRIST PROSTHETIC / GLASS EYE FITTING SET IN CASE, a variety of shapes (both right and left eyes) and sizes of hand-painted acrylic/plastic prosthetic eyes, retaining over 2/3 of the original eyes, each with five digit identification number matched via a grid to the original handwritten inventory, housed in a felt-backed wooden compartmented display case with leather strap hinge and Morocco-leather exterior, the lid with an attached ribbon reading "MONOPLEX / Plastic Eyes" and with an "AO" monogram within a shield. The American Optical Company, Southbridge, MA. Mid 20th century. 9 5/8" x 7 1/8" case.
Catalogue Note: This set was made for use at an optometrist's office, where a patient in need of a prosthetic eye would visit and try on various eyes from this set until a suitably fitting size/shape was found; the corresponding inventory number could then be relayed to the manufacturer with the addition of any necessary customizations including eye color, veining, age rings, flecks, etc. and upon receipt of the finished product, a final fitting would be completed at that doctor's office.

Condition

Very good visual condition, eyes seemingly undamaged, but as mentioned some eyes are not present; case with overall wear and tear and signs of aging including a lack of external hinges, fraying and separations to the leather and clasp, staining to the felt backing and discoloration to other components of case.

From the private collection of John and Val Tull, York, PA.
