PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE CANNER, salt-glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity, cylindrical form with slight shoulder, grooved wax-seal rim, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "WEYMAN & BRO. / Pittsburgh, Pa." Circa 1875. 9 1/8" H, 5 3/4" D rim.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith, Romney, WV.
Catalogue Note: In 1822, George Weyman, the patriarch to Weyman & Bro., is credited with creating a new blend of snuff he called Copenhagen. The smokeless tobacco product is recognized as one of America's earliest consumer products with a brand name. His sons William and Benjamin, inherited the business after their father's death, renaming it "Weyman & Bro." in the 1870s.
