RARE AND IMPORTANT 35-STAR WEST VIRGINIA STATEHOOD CIVIL WAR-PERIOD FLAG BANNER, cotton linen throughout, undersized folky canton displaying slightly askew rows of five-pointed hand-sewn double-appliqued stars, fly consisting of printed red, white, and blue stripes and applied small banner bearing printed "THE UNION" motto. Conservation framed with fly end pleated to reduce length. Circa 1863. 68" x 93" object (as framed), 76 1/2" x 101" OA.
Provenance: The Important Americana Collection of Barbara M. and the late Charlie Hunter, Staunton, VA.
Catalogue Note: The present flag banner is a powerful folk expression of American vernacular textile art created during a critical period of our nation's history. Undoubtedly flown and displayed on numerous occasions, given its scars and bruises, this flag banner incorporates both hand-sewn elements and printed materials in a naïve and fresh overall design.
