RARE JACOB DANNER (MIDDLETOWN, VIRGINIA, 1763-1850) SHENANDOAH VALLEY WALNUT TALL-CASE CLOCK, brass 30-hour movement, painted sheet-iron dial with moon phase and calendar wheel, signed "JACOB DANNER", hood featuring applied complex molded cornice, four full columns, and arched side lights, case with tombstone-style waist door, paneled base, and cut-out bracket-foot base with shaped profile. Poplar secondary wood. Retains pendulum, single weight, and case key and an early surface with rich color. Together with photocopied letter from 1905 detailing provenance. Circa 1800. 92 1/4" H, 23 1/8" W, 12" D.
Catalogue Note: The present tall-case clock includes a photocopied letter on Baltimore, Maryland stationary from Dr. William B. Mann, dated December 5, 1905, which details something of the history of the piece. Dr. Mann writes, in part, "[t]he old clock originally belonged to your great-great Grandfather Luke Bernard living at the time at Woodsborough, Fred. Co., MD."

Condition

Very good overall condition with minor wear and discoloration. Small losses to moldings (one piece detached but present). Loss to proper left front foot. Case door hinges replaced. Rear corners of cornice restored (one piece detached but present). Unknown working condition (See Catalogue Guarantee).
