RARE NEW MARKET, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE CAKE MOLD, lead-glazed with excellent mottling, having a central open tube, a collared rim, and pronounced foot, glazed under the base. Probably John G. Coffman (1803-1889) or John George Schweinfurt (1825-1907), New Market, Shenandoah Co., VA. 1850-1880. 3 3/4" HOA, 8" D.
Published: Rebecca Christian, "A bit of New England in Old Virginia", Country Home, February 1986, p. 58.
Catalogue Note: This is the first New Market, VA cake mold that we have sold, and one of only two we have recorded. The tooling of the rim is identical to the wide-mouth crocks produced in large numbers by Coffman and Schweinfurt during the second half of the 19th century.

Condition

Having a hairline crack to rim, scattered glaze wear, and moderate crazing.
