NEW MARKET, SHENANDOAH CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE PITCHER, manganese- and lead-glazed, approximately one-quart capacity, ovoid form with beaded rim, applied strap handle with medial ridge and impressed lower terminal, glazed to the underside. Excellent gunmetal-sheen glaze, having branch-like so-called crawling glaze, which occurred during the firing process. Probably John G. Coffman (1803-1889), possibly John George Schweinfurt (1825-1907), New Market, Shenandoah Co., VA. 1850-1880. 8 1/4" H, 3 3/4" D rim, 4 1/4" D base.
