RARE WINCHESTER, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA FOLK ART REVERSE-PAINTED PHOTOGRAPHER'S TRADE SIGN, in gold with red pinstriping against a black ground, featuring a lady's directional hand surrounded by lettering for "C. FRED. BARR, / PHOTOGRAPHER". Housed in an old black-painted frame. Circa 1890. 14 1/2" x 19 1/2" sight, 16 3/4" x 21 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: The Getty Museum has a cabinet card portrait photo of an unidentified gentleman in its collection (TMS ID 13655), which bears a photographer's mark for "C. FRED. BARR / 112 MAIN STREET / WINCHESTER, VA". Research is ongoing.
