RICHMOND, VIRGINIA RETAILED, SWISS 17-JEWEL 14K YELLOW GOLD-CASED POCKET WATCH, Vacheron & Constantin Swiss movement, serial number 312554, having a white enamel dial with Arabic chapter ring, sunk seconds subsidiary, and blued-steel hands, housed in a 14K yellow gold open-face watch case by American Watch Case Co. of Newark, NJ with gold-filled crown and bow featuring a monogram engraving of "WHU" to back of case cover. Back of movement with marks, movement and dial with retailer's mark of "THE NOWLAN Co" for Nowlan & Co. of Richmond, VA (active 1866-1926), interior case cover marked "A.W.C.CO. / 14K / 113024". Total weight including non-gold components: 67.9 grams. Circa 1908. Size 10s.
Literature: Hollan - Virginia Silversmiths, p. 572, mentions a pocket watch with a Swiss Vacheron & Constantin movement using "The NOWLAN Co" retailer's mark on the dial.
Dial with several hairlines and a chip near the "2", otherwise in good to very good overall condition with some wear and surface scratches, scattered dents and nicks to case mostly being minor/small in size, crown and bow with gold losses, spots of loss to bluing on hands.
