ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA WALLPAPER-COVERED YELLOW PINE BOX, dovetailed construction, rectangular hinged lid over an open interior, pencil inscribed to the underside "D Pennybacker". Original polychrome-printed wallpaper covering to exterior. The present box was used at Pennybacker Mill, along Linville Creek. Circa 1840. 3" H, 12 3/4" x 18 3/4".

Catalogue Note: Interior with written family history "This box was used by Derick DeHaven Pennybacker / in his store and Mill on / Linville Creek. Pryor to / Civil War." Derick Pennybacker (1797-1878), was married to Amanda W. Strayer in 1831, he is listed as a famer / merchant in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census. The Pennyback Mill was apart of the "BURNING" in 1864 by Sheraton's Federal troops.
Condition
Very good overall condition, with scattered minor to moderate losses to the wallpaper covering, later repair to one leather hinge.
