SAMUEL KAGEY ROLLER (VIRGINIA, 1883-1979) NATURAL BRIDGE PAINTING, watercolor on paper, a summer depiction with flowering trees and visitors strolling along the path beneath the bridge, signed "K. Roller" lower left. Housed under glass in its likely original painted wood frame. Circa 1950. 26" x 18 1/2" sight, 35 3/4" x 27 1/2".
Catalogue Note: Samuel Kagey was born in New Market, VA to John Andrew Roller (1848-1919) and Mary Catherine Kagey (1854-1885). He was a musician and an artist who began painting in New Market and then in Luray. By 1907 he had moved to Louisiana to teach music and paint. He spent time in Chicago on the faculty of Sherwood School. The 1930 Federal census recorded him as a music teacher in Queens, NY, and the 1940 census listed him in New York City as an artist. Soon after, he moved to Lynchburg, VA where he was a member of the Lynchburg Art Club, exhibiting in many of their shows. Roller died in Lynchburg in 1979.
