SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA CAST-IRON STOVE PLATE FRAGMENT, being the bottom section of a plate from a six-plate stove, featuring a central two-handle urn flanked by "A" and "B", and C-scrolls to side, resting on a scrolling platform above "1787". Retains its original dry surface. Cast at William and Samuel Moore's Nancy Furnace. Rockingham Co., VA. Dated 1787. 11 1/8" x 32 1/2".

Catalogue Note: According to H. E. Comstock's article, the "AB" seen on this plate and others from the central Shenandoah Valley are for pattern maker Andrew Bear of Plains Mill, Rockingham Co., VA. Bear's son was Christian Bear, a noted cabinetmaker in nearby New Market who later moved south to Churchville in western Augusta Co. where he continued to make furniture as well as establishing a funeral home that is still operated by the Bear family.
